"ICF" stands for "Insulated Concrete Form(s)." While they are not particularily new, most contractors have chosen to avoid them due the fact that they would need to train an entire workforce to use it. Their general opinion? "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
Our opinion? It is broke. And ICF is the way to fix it.
ICFs are simple. They are sold in 'blocks' consisting of two foam panels for insulation, hard plastic webs every six inches between them (to keep the wall strong and provide 'studs' to attach to), and a hollow core to be filled with concrete and rebar. These are then stacked like children's building blocks to the shape of a house or any other structure, and filled with concrete, up to fifteen feet tall at once!
Wood construction is not strong, long lasting, or efficient. The studs provide thermal bridges and wall insulation ends up doing very little, not to mention this method can be very labour intensive.
Traditional concrete cribbing is inefficient in every sense. It has no insulating value, and requires you to frame stud walls inside it anyways, with all related sub-trades and costs. This is not to mention the fact that ICF is often a comparable price.
ICF provides Better Insulation than any other conventional building method. The reinforced concrete core provides Strength beyond standard methods. The Airtight Envelope provides cleaner air than other methods. The ties every six inches provide more Attachment Points than other methods. Combining six construction steps into one means Speed + Efficiency.
